Lot 2322
Julia Paula, Augusta, 219-220. Denarius (Silver, 20 mm, 2.37 g, 12 h), Rome, 220. IVLIA PAVLA AVG Draped bust of Julia Paula to right. Rev. CONCORDIA Concordia seated left, holding patera in her right hand and leaning with her left elbow on throne; in field to left, star. BMC 172. Cohen 6. RIC 211. Slightly rough and struck from a clashed reverse die, otherwise, good very fine.

Ex Eid Mar 3, 11 May 2024, 480.

The phenomenon of clashed dies is not uncommon in Roman denarii, particularly in the 3rd century. However, it is highly unusual for a ruler's portrait to be as clearly visible on the reverse as that of Julia Paula on this piece.
